Port Huron’s first recorded base ball match game took place on Wednesday, June 12 1867, between the Welkin Base Ball Club and the Regulars of Mount Clemens. The gents from Port Huron won the match by 29 tallys. You can learn more about the original Welkins and history at our History Page.

In 2007 the Welkin Club was recreated as part of Port Huron’s Sesquicentennial celebration. In their inaugural year the Welkins played other vintage clubs from around the state and participated in Greenfield Village’s “World’s Tournament of Vintage Base Ball,” a re-creation of the 1867 tournament the original Welkins played in. In their first year the Welkins managed to duplicate the record of the original 1867 club with a solitary victory.

What to Expect at a Game?

The base ball (yes, two words) games played by the Welkins are hoped to be a re-creation of our past. The games are fast-paced and fun. Participation by the fanatics (that's you) is encouraged.

Many fanatics spread a blanket, bring a picnic lunch and and cheer on the Welkins. (Authentic 1860's slang can be found HERE.) Vintage base ball is great summertime family outing. Kids are encouraged to participate, and may learn some history during the match. We have had vintage automobile displays, President Lincoln, Mark Twain, and protesters from the "Women's Base Ball Suffrage Movement" appear at the Welkin's games. And after the match, youngsters can swing a vintage bat and run the bases.
2013 marks the seventh season of the recreated Welkin Club. Our schedule is set for this season. We hope to see you at one of our match games. If you need directions, you can find them HERE.
Many photographs of this year's match games as well as prior year's games are available for your viewing pleasure. We now have a video page to exhibit some of these new-fangled moving images.
We're glad you stopped by for a visit. Please look around and we hope you enjoy your stay!
